A bit of History
The Arraiolos tapestry has its roots in the time when the south of Portugal was an Arab domain. For centuries this kind of tapestry was a local activity done only for the use of the people in the region. The main centre of this activity was the beautiful village of Arraiolos. Only in the XVII century did the European and Portuguese nobility discover the Arraiolos Rugs as a valuable and cosy piece of decoration for their palaces.
In present days the Arraiolos Rugs are chosen by the great international decorators for modern houses, and have become very popular in a great number of homes, for their beauty and ancient origins.
A good Arraiolos Rug is completely handmade so it became very expensive, not only because of the time it takes, but also for the wool and jute fabric needed. However, with the recent appearance of magazines with photos and drawings, it is possible and very easy to manufacture your own rug.
The chance of doing your own rug is the only way by which a lot of people may actually possess such a fine piece of decoration. Allowing people to do an Arraiolos Rug of quality, at low prices is the main goal of Serranofil, who is a pioneer in the sale of materials and in the publishing of classical as well as new designs.
